Popsessed’s 2011 Top 100: #6
Jenny Silver - Something In Your Eyes

We could write about how we love this song for pretty much being a lost Steps record, but we already did that for our #7*, so let’s go with us loving this for pretty much being everything we love about a good Eurovision Song Contest song. Mind, Jenny never made it to Eurovision, but she took part in Swedish’ Melodifestivalen preselections, and it’s songs like this that are the reason we may actually prefer their preselection to the actual Song Contest. It might be a bit too cheesy or schlager-y for some people’s tastes, and it’s definitely not the most inspired song in our 2011 Top 100, but we just never get tired of Swedish catchiness and key changes.

* It would make a rather good Lisa tour solo though, right?

Something tells us when Madonna released Girl Gone Wild her aim wasn’t to get Give Me All Your Luvin’ back to number 1 on our list. Still, two songs in the top 5 isn’t a bad deal. Let’s see how many will be there once MDNA gets been released.

New entries:4. Madonna - Girl Gone Wild11. Glee Cast - What Doesn’t Kill You (Stronger)12. Le Kid - SuperficialGlee pretty much did a carbon copy of Kelly’s What Doesn’t Kill You, but with a song that great that’s no bad thing, and the slightly different version was enough to reignite our interest in the song, giving the original a nice little climb back as well.

Meanwhile, Le Kid don’t waste any time releasing yet another new song, in collaboration with what seems to be a line of clothes(?).

As usual the combination of new entries and reappearances means a little clean-up of songs that are or got a little old, slowly putting a stop to the huge Saturdays domination on this list. Don’t worry, we still love them.
A new Song Chart will be up next week, meanwhile you also can keep up with (the available part of) our chart on Spotify!

Popsessed Album Chart: 04-03-2012

Not much movement at the top of our list this week. While Rihanna and Kelly switch places, The Saturdays spend their 3rd week at number one, making On Your Radar the best scoring album of this year thusfar, in a perfect tie with Stronger.

This week sees 2 ‘new’ entries in Lana Del Rey and the Ting Tings’ latest albums. We are well aware we’re especially late with the Lana love, but sometimes an album just takes a little longer to convince us. (Still playing all those older albums a lot did not help Lana either)
Not quite surprisingly The Veronicas leave the list again after one week, because or short rediscovery of it was very much a one week love affair. The demise of Lise Karlsnes was less expected. We still enjoy her album, but it just can’t compete with some of our proper favourites that make up this week’s top 15.
Our weekly Song Chart should be up tomorrow!

She had to wait for two weeks, but miss Perry finally got herself a number one on our list! Meanwhile, there’s a lot of exits and entries this week, mainly because we sat down to check if there weren’t any older songs that still deserved to be there. Since we only started doing this list 9 weeks ago, and only focussed on new material since, we were bound to overlook some songs. Consider it corrected. There’s some proper new entries as well though!

New entries:4. Joan Franka - You And Me5. Kovak - Killer Boots9. Saint Etienne - Tonight15. Karmin - Crash Your Party17. Kylie Minogue - On A Night Like This (on Abbey Road)20. Love Generation - Just A Little Bit22. Glee Cast ft. Ricky Martin - La Isla Bonita24. Vanbot - Got To Get Out30. Britney Spears - Rock Star38. Nicola Roberts - Memory Of YouEurovision is slowly creeping up on us, as reflected on number 4 and 20.We’re not huge fans yet of the Joan Franka song, but we absolutely love the lady and her great voice, which got her pretty far on the original The Voice (of Holland) (Quite pretty, right?)The ladies of Redone’s girl group Love Generation didn’t qualify, but still came up with a quite entertaining Redone production.
Then there’s new singles from Saint Etienne, Karmin (well sorta), Vanbot, Glee, and Kovak (who we wrote about earlier this week, Kylie did another stunning orchestral song, and fashionably late we’re still quite into the Nicola b-side and Britney demo.

Unsurprisingly, a huge amount of new entries, also means a lot of exits, despite the songs all still being quite good. But when you’re a September release, like All Fired Up, hanging around until February is hardly anything to be sad about!

Popsessed Album Chart: 26-02-2012

Not a lot of action on our album chart this week. Two albums that left last week make a come-back, the others move around a little, and we dug up an old Veronicas album, which sounded just as great as it did in 2007. This one especially never gets old.
As we already predicted last week, the two old albums that showed up in our last list leave again this week. Pretty likely the same will happen to the Veronicas next week, because as much as we love rediscovering old albums, we hardly ever get properly obsessed with them again. Meanwhile, Eric Saade has also had his best time on our list.
Our weekly Song Chart should be up later tonight, and sees a lot more action than this week’s Album Chart!

Popsessed’s 2011 Top 100: #8
Selena Gomez & The Scene - Love You Like A Love Song

When it comes to popstars, we really don’t care whether they come from an indie background, stage school, reality tv, West End or Disney, as long as the music’s any good. When it comes to the Disney ones, we are very much used to the material being good.. and only that. Mostly pleasant pop/rock albums, with occasionally a surprisingly strong standout track. We weren’t expecting much more from Selena’s third album, especially not considering it got released only 9 months after her last effort. But with When The Sun Goes Down Selena grabbed our expectations, threw them out of the window and handed us a close to perfect album with many shockingly strong tracks instead..

‘So Selena’s new single. It’s no Naturally.’
That’s how we first posted about When The Sun Goes Down’s very finest moment Love You Like A Love Song. We were fools for not instantly fully appreciating the song, but we did have a point.. Love You Like A Love Song may not be any less brilliant for it, but it’s definitely no Naturally. That’s a good thing though. We’re convinced Selena & Co could have easily come up with another big pop/rock song (actually they did), but would that really have surprised or impressed anyone?
Instead, not unlike Hilary Duff did with Dignity, Selena left the usual Disney chick rock behind for a second, and went to record the best song of her carreer. A song that doesn’t sound like anything she’s done before, or (m)any other songs in general. A song that has no huge ‘in your face’ chorus, but in it’s own subtle way is way more addictive than many big instantly catchy songs out there. A song that we heard even people who normally don’t like manufactured pop admit, is indeed very very good.

For months we saw Love You Like A Love Song as a contender for the number one, or at the very least number two position on this list. It could still easily belong there. From here on it’s just all very close, and some of the other songs may have benefited from their bigger choruses when we played samples of all songs back to back to determine the top 10 order. A short snippet really doesn’t do this song justice, but whenever we play it as a whole it still fully sucks us in. We can only hope one day we’ll meet someone who we’ll love like I Love You Like A Love Song.

Popsessed’s 2011 Top 100: #15-11

About time to write a little about the last 5 great 2011 singles that álmost made our top 10..

15. Britney Spears - Hold It Against Me

Although Miss Spears is hardly known for being the most revolutionary or original artist, when it comes to her album’s first singles she almost always brings something completely fresh and unexpected. She did it with Baby…, Slave, Gimme More, and Hold It Against Me once again delivers. Just like these singles turn, what could have been just a pleasant discography, into an amazing one, it’s also songs like Hold It that turned the already good Femme Fatale into an amazing album, and our mostplayed one of 2011. We’re not sure if it’s the stompin’ chorus, the brilliant breakdown, or the great melody (a friend of mine who doesn’t speak English actually commented on what a pretty and emotional song it was, before asking me what it was about..) but it’s definitely her finest moment since Piece Of Me.

14. Jennifer Lopez ft. Pitbull - On The Floor

Being one of the first major hits I can remember hearing and dancing and singing (in some made up language) along to, the Lambada always has had a special place in my heart. You may think with nostalgia like that they could have just shouted ‘GET ON THE FLOOR!!!’ over the song for 3 minutes straight and we would have loved it, but not too long ago the Black Eyed Peas did prove us that sampling a song we love can just as well end up going horribly wrong. So yeah, we were quite pleasantly surprised by how much we loved this song, and how it both worked great as a new song as well as keeping the magic of the original. One of the greatest summer songs we know, despite being released in february.

13. Tove Styrke - Call My Name

Tove might have only come third on Swedish Idol, but she’s still one of the two finest acts to come from that show for us (we’ll get to the other one soon!). Her selftitled debut album is everything a great pop album should be. Diverse, adventurous yet accessible, still growing on you after tons of plays, and pretty much the best Xenomania produced album that isn’t produced by Xenomania we’ve ever heard. If we’d have to pick one thing it’s lacking it would be a properly big in your face ‘tune’. That is, until Call My Name got released, which is exactly that. Every part is interesting as her previous material, but this time with a ridiculously catchy chorus. We dare anyone to give this 2 plays without getting hooked!

12. Nicola Roberts - Beat Of My Drum

L! O! V! E! Since it’s a bit late for us to still do a 2011 album list, I suppose this is where we get to praise Cinderella’s Eyes. Well, sales aside, everything about that album’s era was flawless: we got great b-sides, unplugged versions, remixes, mash-ups, demo versions, stunning coverart, and (not unimportant either) a very very solid album. Although we definitely would have welcomed more songs as fun, feisty and uplifting as Beat Of My Drum. The video with it’s bum dance, hair whips and cheerleaders is still very entertaining as well. When it comes to songs to gleefully shout along to L! U! V! Madonna has got nothing on this.

11. Agnes - Don’t Go Breaking My Heart

We almóst called Tove the greatest Swedish Idol act, when we realized Agnes actually won the show in 2005. However, it wasn’t until her, fittingly titled, third album Dance Love Pop and it’s great single Release Me, that we really started paying attention to her. Although we’re still undecided whether her new single is or isn’t as great as her biggest hit, we are glad she sticked to the same sound, with another ‘heartache on the dancefloor’ anthem with huge vocals. What we would have done for this to have been Steps’ comeback single!

Popsessed’s 2011 Top 100: #15-11

While compiling our 2011 Top 100 we already played all the songs so often that after 2 months of counting down we’re almost getting 2011 tired. But that surely doesn’t apply to the final 15, which are all songs that, up to a year later, still scream ‘AMAZING!!’ every single time we hear them, reminding us 2011 really was quite a good year for pop.

A write-up on these 5 songs, ánd the reveal of our 2011 Top 10 should be up soon! Any guesses to what will be in there?

Popsessed’s 2011 Top 100: #30-26

About time to explain our next five 2011 Top 100 choices..

20. Glee Cast - Loser Like Me

There’s an odd pattern here with the last 3 videos all starting with a Max Martin song. And although we’d love to pretend we have something new to say for this one, we really don’t. Just like What The Hell and Light Up The World, Loser Like Me is just a fun, catchy, uplifting piece of pop, that screams ‘underdogs, yay!’. Nothing new, but perfectly entertaining at the same time.

19. Britney Spears - I Wanna Go

Let’s start by saying the video for this was a hot mess. We’re not sure what it was going for, but it made us like the song less, which isn’t really what music videos are supposed to do, is it? But that aside, and ignoring this and the fact that the whistling still reminds us of Bob Sinclar anno 2006, this song really is good fun. Our instant favourite for 3rd single from Femme Fatale, which was our mostplayed album of 2011. The song does a great job of capturing what we liked about early days pure pop Britney.

18. Booty Luv - This Night

When the Saturdays came up with Notorious we found it quite refreshing to see a girl group go dance. A few months later, Booty Luv returned on the scene to remind us they did it first. They did it several times in 2007, one time in 2009, and in 2011 they once again came up with a dance smash that sounded perfectly current, yet 100% Booty Luv. We have no idea what happened since. Why they were suddenly called ‘Cherise & Nadia’. If this even ended up being released. Last thing we read they were shooting a new video in late 2011 though, so we hope they’ll do it all again this year!

17. CocknBullKid - Asthma Attack

We’re not sure what we were expecting when we first saw CocknBullKid’s name, but it wasn’t until months after that we decided to check her out. About 10 minutes later we had her album preordered. Asthma Attack sounded fresh, catchy, fun, and unlike anything we’d heard before. And it had strings. We LOVE strings in pop. But the whole production’s lush actually. Such a great feelgood song. The whole album’s very much worth checking out, don’t let the name put you off!

16. One Direction - What Makes You Beautiful

We’re really not that big on boy bands. Some of them (‘N Sync, Backstreet Boys, Westlife) eventually won us over with some good (mostly uptempo) singles, but a new boy band is never something that makes us sit up and pay attention. And with us not even having watched season 7 of X Factor UK, to be honest the only reason we listened to this song in the first place was because we just relaunched our blog and we felt we had to keep up with all new pop releases out there. (Actually, as long as we have the time for it, we still feel that way.) We weren’t expecting much, leave alone for this to end up being ‘end of the year list material’. But they proved us wrong. Despite not being a Max Martin song, this is the first boyband single to come close to the Backstreet Boys’ great Max Martin powerpop since their own heyday in the early ’00s, and probably the strongest boyband debut single we’ve heard. The album was an equally nice surprise.

Stay tuned for the last 15 songs to be revealed soon!

Poor poor Katy. While she was patiently waiting for Madonna to step aside so her The One That Got Away 2.0 could climb to number one, XELLE stormed in at the last minute and took the top spot instead, with a song that, to make matters even worse, sounds like it was a little bit inspired by her very own Firework.

New entries:1. XELLE - Invincible3. Madonna - Like A Prayer (live at the Superbowl)5. XELLE - Hologram19. Rihanna - Red Lipstick37. Lady Gaga - So Happy I Could Marry The NightIn other news: Invincible got us back into XELLE’s previous single Hologram as well, Like A Prayer is a better song than Give Me All Your Luvin’ (‘you read it here first!’), one of our initially least favourite Talk Talk Talk songs finally clicked, and if you throw two Gaga songs together you essentially get.. a Gaga song. Which is still quite good.

Once again some really enjoyable songs leave, which of course doesn’t mean we don’t love them, or hey wouldn’t have been here in the first place!
