We’ve said this before, but we really love pop bands. Not to be confused with pop groups, which we’re definitely fans of as well, the kind of bands that play and write their own songs, yet stay pop sensible, almost always deliver, be it Saint Etienne, Dragonette, Alphabeat, Le Kid, No Doubt, or in this case: Kovak.
Going by first impressions (since we’ve only just discovered them), this british pop band doesn’t necessarily bring anything new to the table.
That’s no problem with us, because the whole reason their ’80s/electropop/rock sound sounds familiar is because we’ve always enjoyed bands like this. Throw Blondie, No Doubt, The Sounds and The Sahara Hotnights into a bowl, plus some pictures of what Gwen Stefani looks like (and perhaps just a tiny tiny bit of Goldfrapp (like a lock of Alison’s hair) for the more electronic bits) stir it for about 5 minutes, and you’ll pretty much know what to expect here. It’s quite a pleasant sound.
Also, Gwen hairdo’s or not, we kinda like the singer’s style. As far as inspirations go, they could have done a lot worse.
We have Kovak’s management ánd not in the last place Popjustice to thank for making us finally discover this band, which has been active since 2009. The big upside to a late discovery like this is that they’ve already got a full album out on iTunes, plus a bunch of songs on their SoundCloud! Meanwhile, album no. 2 is on it’s way!

Popsessed Song Chart 12-02-2012
It’s about time for some new material to be released because a lot of the songs in our song chart right now mainly thank their positions to a lack of fresh competition. Which is not to say these aren’t 40 songs we love, but just a little more action wouldn’t hurt!

The power of Madonna is keeping Katy from shooting right to the top of the list, but number 2 isn’t exactly bad for a single we didn’t even know was being released a week ago.
The R.I.O. song entering at number 7 is quite a random one, cause it’s well over a year old. But it’s our list, we just discovered it, and we love it (generic dance tune ahoy!), so it’s earned it’s spot. As for Taio, he thanks his spot to our iTunes randomly playing him a lot this week, although the song is catchy enough. It’s no Dynamite though.

3 great songs, but they’re a bit past their prime for us. We’re as shocked as anyone how quickly Elephant’s leaving the room already, but, unlike any other Alexandra song, we just have no desire to go back to it at the moment.
A new Song Chart will be up next week, meanwhile you also can keep up with (the biggest part of) our chart on Spotify!

Popsessed Song Chart 06-02-2012
Congrats, Madge, it seems like your Superbowl performance at least landed you one number one already! Not the biggest surprise considering how much we loved the song, video, and performance, but definitely a worthy successor to top the list after Kelly’s Stronger. Kelly’s still going strong hanging around in the top 3 though, while Alexandra Stan somehow worked her way back up there too (we somehow just keep being obsessed with that song, don’t ask why!).

This week’s batch of newcomers is being led by two dutch ladies, X Factor winner Rochelle and country chick Ilse. Both acts most of you probably won’t be very familiar with, but definitely worth checking out.
We already discovered Alyssa Reid last summer, and even though, as big fans of the original, we probably should hate what she did to Heart’s Alone, we just can’t resist that chorus, even when it’s being covered.
As for the other three new entries: they are just the usual bunch of ‘album tracks/singles that suddenly clicked, months after we first heard them’.

A new Song Chart will be up next week, meanwhile you also can keep up with (the biggest part of) our chart on Spotify!

Popsessed Album Chart: 05-02-2012
Another not extremely thrilling week for our charts, although this time we have at least one new entry. Well, new as in a ‘november 2011 release’, but we finally had the time to properly listen to the Rogue Traders’ new album/Greatest Hits bundle The Sound Of The Drums, and it’s pretty much everything we like about them.
Meanwhile, Kelly spends her 4th week at the top, we’re still really getting into the One Direction and Parade albums (the latter really is surprisingly stellar for a flopped girl group), and the other 11 albums all are still being more or less fabulous as well.
Our Popsessed Song Chart will be up tomorrow!

Popsessed Album Chart: 29-01-2012
Us having had quite a busy week doesn’t only reflect in a lack of updates, but also a lack of thrilling changes to our weekly charts, since we hardly had time to listen to any music over the past week. And so today sees a very similar album chart to last week, with only some tiny unremarkable movements in the middle. Let’s hope next week will be a bit more exciting.

Popsessed Album Chart: 22-01-2011
A calm week for our album chart, with no proper new entries, although Le Kid pops up ‘again’ (technically not cause the chart wasn’t around when we were first obsessed with their album) thanks to their new single Human Behaviour, kicking Sneaky Sound System’s From Here To Anywhere out of the list.
Meanwhile, with the first week ‘new album’ rush being over for Young London, Kelly returns to the top for her second week at number 1. And yeah, that’s about it for this week!

What do you think?Popsessed’s 2011 Top 100: #46-41
![]() | 45. Jennifer Lopez ft. Lil’ Wayne - I’m Into You We’re quite literally picking up where we left, because I’m Into You is a very similar song to #46’s Got 2 Luv U. Both are cute, breezy, euphoric, infatuated midtempos, with some great catchy choruses, and then some rapping we could take or leave. We can’t help but cheer up whenever we hear this song, and the same could be said for pretty much everything on J.Lo’s amazingly consistent comeback album Love?. |
![]() | 44. Little Jackie - 31 Flavors Anyone who’s been following this countdown knows what we love Little Jackie for by now: great motown inspired pop with some properly funny, wellwritten, lyrics. 31 Flavors is a shining example of this, excusing/glorifying adultery with lines like ‘When I’m with one man, I kinda feel like I’m dying, so consider my infidelity self defense.’ Not the strongest defense, but it definitely makes for a very entertaining song. |
![]() | With Girls Aloud and Mini Viva gone, and one great single after another, Le Kid quickly became our new favourite pop group in 2011. America was pretty much for Le Kid what Call The Shots was for Girls Aloud and I Wish for Mini Viva: a usually immensely fun and feisty pop act suddenly coming up with an amazing melancholic electronic midtempo. In all three cases mentioned the singles weren’t their most instant ones, but they are definitely songs that have made for many many rewarding listens, and have yet to get old. |
![]() | When you ask a random person what they think of when you mention Aqua, ‘great ballads’ probably won’t be the number 1 answer. Shame really, because, even though we too mainly turn to them when we feel like cheesy europop, some of their slow songs are definitely amongst their best material. Aquarium had Turn Back Time, the most un-Aqua single they’ve done, which never failed to make people go ‘I loved that song… It’s Aqua? No way!’, Aquarius had the stunning title track, and last year Megalomania provided us with it’s lovely lead single Playmate To Jesus. Admittedly more of a midtempo than a proper ballad, but still one of Aqua’s more serious and beautiful songs. Something about it makes us feel like christmas, and we absolutely love it for it. |
![]() | 41. Katy Perry ft. Kanye West - E.T. Forgive us for our foolishness, for despite us owning and loving the Teenage Dream album, we never found this song that special, and it wasn’t until this performance that it finally clicked. Luckily just in time to still correct our mistake in this top 100. We don’t know what we were on but E.T.’s yet another great Katy Perry single. We do prefer the Kanye free album version though. |
Number 40-36 are coming up soon!

Popsessed Song Chart 15-1-2012
Quite a shake-up in our Song Chart again this week! Young London’s album release hasn’t gone unnoticed with 6 of it’s songs entering the list, although they’re still being outdone by The Saturdays who have a magnificent 9 songs in there again. Alexandra’s Elephant storms in at number 3, only being held back from the number one spot by the lack of a HQ version ánd the amazing new Le Kid single, which came completely out of nowhere.
Meanwhile, Pixie Lott benefits a little from the release of her hysterical new music video, while Madonna’s huge leap pretty much shows how much we care about the whole Madge vs. Gaga feud.

Of course some old songs had to make room for the new ones..

Most were getting old, or just not thát amazing, with Alexandra’s Elephant mix not really being required anymore now the radio edit is out there.

What do you think?Popsessed’s 2011 Top 100: #45-41
The upside to our clumsiness is that you now get two of our 2011 Top 100 updates in a row! A little midtempo selection today.. of course we have more to say on it than that, but we’ll leave the write-up till tomorrow, so for now, just enjoy the music!
Le Kid - Human Behaviour What a treat. We can’t imagine a better way to kick off the week than waking up to a completely unexpected new Le Kid single, which is every bit as pop friendly and ’80s tinted as we’ve come to expect from them. 2012 is off to a great start! |
