Popsessed Album Chart: 15-01-2011

Another week gone, time for another update of our album chart!

It’s inevitable at this time of year, but it’s once again a quiet week for our albums. Still, we got one new album which, at this time of little new releases, we’ve obviously been playing a lot. We’ll write more on Young London’s album later this week, but their selftitled debut (which is out now) is quite an enjoyable pop album that will definitely be hanging around in our chart for a while!

Meanwhile, we keep loving Kelly, The Saturdays, Cher and Little Jackie, the One Direction album keeps growing, and Fawni’s Dirty Street Glam already leaves after just one week in the chart

Our Popsessed Song Chart will be up tomorrow!

Popsessed Song Chart 8-1-2012
There’s quite a lot of movement in our second weekly song chart!Alesha Dixon gets the year’s first proper 2012 number 1, obviously in a period with few releases, but nontheless it’s a great and deserved victory. Then there’s a quite awesome mash-up, Cher and Little Jackie benefit a lot from their video releases this week, and From Above makes us wish we hadn’t finished our 2011 Top 100 yet. Why do we álways end up discovering great past year singles one or two weeks into the next year?

Meanwhile, Alexandra Burke didn’t quite trample the competition with her Elephant yet, but we have a feeling that might happen soon enough when the radio edit surfaces!
New entries:1. Alesha Dixon - Do It Our Way (Play)2. Rihanna vs. Katy Perry - You Da One That Got Away12. Little Jackie - 31 Flavors24. Kelly Clarkson - Alone26. From Above - Not The Same Girl28. Alexandra Burke - Elephant (Sympho Nympho Remix)33. Aqua - Kill Myself39. One Direction - Stole My Heart40. Fawni - EchoOf course new entries also mean that some songs had to leave..

All perfectly decent songs, that would probably have been around a bit longer than 1 week if our charts had been around last year, but by now there’s unfortunately 40 songs we’re more excited about!

Popsessed Album Chart: 08-01-2011

Time for our second ever album chart, which means our first proper chart update!

No major changes this week.. We hardly listened to Little Mix, which allowed other acts to move up a few spots, we realized we still enjoy the Aqua album quite a lot, and Parade’s debut kept growing on us. There’s two modest new entries at the bottom of our list, being two dance pop albums by the Austrian Fawni and the Swedish Eric Saade. Their entries meant the end for the chart runs of David Guetta’s Nothing But The Beat and Zoë Badwi’s Zoë.

The Popsessed Album Chart is based on a combination on which albums we play and enjoy most. A fresh Popsessed Song Chart should be up soon as well.

Earlier today we posted our first Popsessed Album Chart, and now it’s time for our Song Chart. We realize ‘singles chart’ has a nicer ring to it, but we didn’t want to limit ourselves to singles only. So our weekly list will be a mix of new hits, album tracks, rarities, remixes, and the occasional old song we’ve just (re)discovered. Just like the album chart this isn’t strictly about which song is ‘the best’, it’s just the selection of songs we’re playing and enjoying the most at the moment!

Just like with the album chart this week sees only new entries, which is kinda obvious since this is the first ever chart we do. In the future we’ll do little write-ups on new songs that enter the chart, but with 40 songs that seems a bit much, so we’ll just run through the entire thing quickly:
- Not entirely unexpected there’s plenty of songs from albums that are in our album chart, with The Saturdays and Little Mix pretty much ruling both lists this week.
- Glad You Came and Get Back (ASAP) are very much the odd ones out, having been released months ago already, but both songs just clicked with us recently. And they clicked big time!
- Alexandria Everett and Allison Harvard are two contestants from America’s Next Top Model who ended up recording their own singles. Those were more publicity stunts than anything else, but nevertheless both ended up being quite amazing.
- And then there’s one other X Factor recording we fell in love with, a very decent boyband song, something that’s an early draft of Madonna’s new single, Sophie Ellis-Bextor acting raunchy, and plenty of other very enjoyable songs..

We plan on making a Spotify playlist or something like that of our weekly Song Chart, although obviously some songs would be missing.. Do you know a good alternative, or do you think Spotify is definitely the way to go?

Popsessed’s 2011 Top 100: #90-81

Yesterday we posted our second montage of favourite 2011 singles, today we give you a little write-up to explain how these 10 songs made our top 100..

90. The Saturdays - My Heart Takes Over

Initially, we weren’t very impressed by The Saturdays’ latest slowie, but after a few plays it grew a lot on us, and it seems like it might still be growing even more. It’s not quite their 2 Become 1, and we do prefer our fun Saturdays to gloomy ones, but it’s still a decent effort.

89. James Morrison - I Won’t Let You Go

Well, isn’t this bunch of songs just a ball of fun! We swear we’re truly quite happy people, most of the time! Still, we’re suckers for romance, and James Morrison is one of the few male singers who knows how to pull all the right heartstrings. We’re very tough people, and of course wáy too cool to ever shed a single tear, but had we been ones to well up over a song, this one would definitely have done the trick.

88. Katy Perry - Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)

We’re probably risking being accused of having no sense of humour here, but we like Last Friday Night despite, instead of thanks to, it’s video, which is seriously one of the most unfunny things we saw all year. It’s well produced, we love that Rebecca got another minute of fame, but this American Pie kind of humour just isn’t for us. Nonetheless, the song itself is properly fun, without trying too hard to be hilarious.

87. Vanbot - Make Me, Break Me

Well, this video looks like somebody stole Annie’s wardrobe, Little Boots’ keyboards, Robyn’s dance moves and Goldfrapp’s visuals. That pretty much covers Vanbot’s sound as well. Nicely produced melancholic electropop, which doesn’t do anything we haven’t heard before, but holds it’s own very well next to the aforementioned veterans.

86. Britney Spears - Criminal

2011 was quite a good year for Britney. Femme Fatale ended up being our mostplayed album by a mile, and single choice wise an album campaign of hers had never been so spot on since her debut.

Being the only slow song on an otherwise very feisty album, Criminal immediately stood out to us, and felt like an excellent choice after the previous three uptempo singles. Unfortunately the release ended up being a bit of a non-event, turning Criminal into the kind of single that will be overlooked on future Greatest Hits albums (silly girl didn’t even perform it on tour!). But at least it gave us one of her greatest video moments since air hostess Britney blinked at us in 2004 (that would be the flying bullets scene), and the right to include the song on this list!

85. Rebecca Black - My Moment

Yes, we’re being serious. Well, at least we think we are.. When it comes to Rebecca we’re kinda lost on where irony stops and genuine enjoyment begins. But no matter what made us go and listen to this song over and over again got us seriously hooked on it. Say what you want about this girl, but jokes aside this is actually a decent pop song, had any of the Disney girls released this it would have been a proper smash, and the ‘paper’ line is still absolutely glorious.

84. Beyoncé - Love On Top

At least we think this was a single, cause with Bey you never can tell.. Either way, this was our instant favourite on 4, just for being such an irresistibly cute, bubbly song. Whenever it comes on it’s impossible not to smile and bop along. The cheaptastic video actually works quite nicely as well, once it gets going.

83. Professor Green ft. Emeli Sandé

As far as we’re concerned this song is ‘Emeli Sandé featuring (a little too much of) Professor Green’. We guess it has it’s function of building up to the chorus, but we’re really no fans of his rapping. Emeli’s voice, however, is absolutely heavenly and completely makes up for it. Had this been a solo song of hers it would have easily been top 50.

82. Avril Lavigne - Smile

You know that I’m a crazy bitch, I do what I want when I feel like it.. Call us cynics, but 9 times out of 10 people who refer to themselves as being ‘totally crazy’ or ‘wild’ are either a real bore, or the most annoying person you’ll ever meet. Hearing those lyrics and watching this video, realizing you’re looking at a 26 year old, even though we live in a world where Madonna still dances around in her diapers, feels just a little bit off. But when it all comes together in an extremely catchy Max Martin produced song, all we can say is ‘oh.. What the hell..’ This song dóés make us smile.

81. Eric Saade ft. Dev - Hotter Than Fire

Eric Saade outdid Rihanna this year, by actually releasing two albums within the same calendar year. We’re kinda glad he did, because as much as we enjoyed Eric Saade Vol. 1, there weren’t any singles on it that stood out enough for us to include here, so Hotter Than Fire came just in time for us to still give him the mention he deserved (and we mean júst in time, he was responsible for kicking Without You out of this list, only hours before we started this countdown). Ironically, in bits the song sound more than a little like DJ Got Us Falling In Love, but that song didn’t have Dev going ‘I say I’m flamable, I’m TNT, light it up..’ which is by far the greatest part of this song.

Stay tuned for our #80-71 montage, which should be around soon!
