Popsessed Song Chart 8-1-2012
There’s quite a lot of movement in our second weekly song chart!Alesha Dixon gets the year’s first proper 2012 number 1, obviously in a period with few releases, but nontheless it’s a great and deserved victory. Then there’s a quite awesome mash-up, Cher and Little Jackie benefit a lot from their video releases this week, and From Above makes us wish we hadn’t finished our 2011 Top 100 yet. Why do we álways end up discovering great past year singles one or two weeks into the next year?

Meanwhile, Alexandra Burke didn’t quite trample the competition with her Elephant yet, but we have a feeling that might happen soon enough when the radio edit surfaces!
New entries:1. Alesha Dixon - Do It Our Way (Play)2. Rihanna vs. Katy Perry - You Da One That Got Away12. Little Jackie - 31 Flavors24. Kelly Clarkson - Alone26. From Above - Not The Same Girl28. Alexandra Burke - Elephant (Sympho Nympho Remix)33. Aqua - Kill Myself39. One Direction - Stole My Heart40. Fawni - EchoOf course new entries also mean that some songs had to leave..

All perfectly decent songs, that would probably have been around a bit longer than 1 week if our charts had been around last year, but by now there’s unfortunately 40 songs we’re more excited about!

Popsessed Album Chart: 08-01-2011

Time for our second ever album chart, which means our first proper chart update!

No major changes this week.. We hardly listened to Little Mix, which allowed other acts to move up a few spots, we realized we still enjoy the Aqua album quite a lot, and Parade’s debut kept growing on us. There’s two modest new entries at the bottom of our list, being two dance pop albums by the Austrian Fawni and the Swedish Eric Saade. Their entries meant the end for the chart runs of David Guetta’s Nothing But The Beat and Zoë Badwi’s Zoë.

The Popsessed Album Chart is based on a combination on which albums we play and enjoy most. A fresh Popsessed Song Chart should be up soon as well.

Popsessed’s 2011 Top 100: #80-71

Yesterday we posted our second montage of favourite 2011 singles, today we give you a little write-up to explain how these 10 songs made our top 100..

80. Alexis Jordan - Good Girl

Alexis Jordan quite impressed us last year. Not only did she release 3 very decent singles in a row (4 if you count 2010’s Happiness), but she also released one of the strongest debut albums we know. Not a bad song to be seen. Good Girl may not be the most original song, but it was surprisingly fresh and poppy for an American popstar, and it was a nice surprise at the time that there was more of where Happiness came from.

79. Martin Rolinski - Blame It On A Decent Matter

6 months on we still have no clue at all what this song was about or what the title is supposed to mean. Ór when the long promised music video is coming. What we do know is Martin used to front one of Sweden’s finest pop groups, BWO, and his first solo song isn’t a huge departure from their sound. A nice slice of electronic Scandipop, even though it’s not quite up there with BWO’s finest hours.

78. Beyoncé - Best Thing I Never Had

We’re aware that only 3 days ago we mentioned that Love On Top was our instant favourite on 4. Best Thing.. took a little longer, but around the time of the video premiere it clicked with us, and quickly became one of our dearest Beyoncé ballads, even though it still took another few months for us to properly get the lyrics. (This is quite embarrassing, but for months we’ve thought the song was in fact about the best guy Beyoncé ever met, and regretted never getting)

77. Alex Gaudino ft. Kelly Rowland - What A Feeling

…and thát’s when Kelly finally got to beat Beyoncé at something! These positions are actually a big coincidence, but quite funny anyway. Long before Kelly disappointed us with her album, and made us fall in love with her on X Factor, only to make us fall out of love again on the same show, we really quite liked her music. Over the past few years she’s done many great (dance) singles, so to never get the accompanying album was quite the letdown. Still, despite not being When Love Takes Over or I’m In Love (I Wanna Do It), What A Feeling was a very enjoyable slice of 2011 Ms. Kelly.

76. Rihanna ft. Calvin Harris - We Found Love

This one might be a little bit controversial, considering how much everyone seems to love it. And don’t get us wrong, we like it as well, cause there have been enough single releases for it to would have been far outside of our list if we didn’t!
But when we hear people raving about it being the song of the year, we really feel in most cases this is just a case of a very short term memory, with the song just being too fresh to get old for anyone yet. For us it’s actually the opposite: the song took a while to grow on us, we then loved it for about two weeks, and then we went back to just ‘liking’ it again. Right now we do enjoy the song, but it just feels too new to judge properly if it will become a 2011 classic for us, or a song that will be old by february.

75. Nicole Scherzinger - Wet

Poor Rihanna, being beaten by a shameless S&M/Only Girl rip-off. No originality prizes for Ms. Scherzinger here, but nontheless she did deliver a bangin’ tune with a video so hot it made the Pussycat Dolls look like a chastity club.

74. Helena Paparizou - Mr. Perfect

A very last minute addition, responsible for J.Lo’s Papi júst missing this list. With a little bit of Anastacia, a little of Gabriella Cilmi, and a whole lot of attitude this closed the year on a high note. It’s all about those talky bits.

73. XELLE - Party Girl

We first checked out XELLE just because we were curious about ‘that girl group with a drag member’ we heard about. We’ll have to admit we were expecting something ‘so bad it might become good again’, but what do you know? Party Girl actually didn’t need to rely on being bad to be good. With funny lyrics, an extremely catchy chorus, and an impressive one take video (shot on an actual moving subway train!) this is genuinely good fun.

72. Anjulie - Brand New Bitch

When the actual lyrics rhyme with ‘chick’ it’s pretty clear that Anjulie’s only being a ‘bitch’ to get some attention. Well, it did work. And it did made the track even more enjoyable once we started associating it with ANTM’s Angelea (those names are pronounced the same…right?). Still, we’re not easily shocked, and this definitely wouldn’t be here if it were just an average song with some strong language. Brand New Bitch actually is a cracking dance tune.

71. Cher Lloyd - Swagger Jagger

We already mentioned this yesterday, when discussing her new video, but initially we didn’t like Swagger Jagger at áll. And we have no clue what went on there, but within a few months we went from being ‘haters’ to loving it. We’re still not the biggest fans of her shouting her way through the verses, but the chorus, and especially those synths? Yeah, we love them. Although the Haters, I see you later part has been done better.

Stay tuned for our numbers 70-61, which should be around soon!

We have to hand it to Cher.. We were indifferent to her at first, then just annoyed by Swagger Jagger, and just 6 months later we’ve ended up really enjoying her album, Swagger Jagger clicked, and we have to say her new music video is actually really really great.

Want U Back is hardly as marmite as her debut single, and actually was an instant favourite of ours on her album, so we were very pleased with the choice to release it. And now the video has only made it more of a treat. The concept of moving images on pictures an magazine covers is hardly new, but it’s excecution here is just excellent.

The only minor flaws are the rather pointless rap, and the fact they slightly ran out of ideas in the second half of the video (while there’s enough in the first half that could have been spread a bit better). But really: a very good job to all involved, and the video of the year (for now).

Popsessed’s 2011 Top 100: #80-71

Time for our next montage of 2011 favourites! Today’s selection is a very uptempo and attitude loaded bunch, which may include a few slightly controversial choices (well, more like controversial positions I suppose).

As you might be used to now, a write-up explaining our choices will be up tomorrow!

Earlier today we posted our first Popsessed Album Chart, and now it’s time for our Song Chart. We realize ‘singles chart’ has a nicer ring to it, but we didn’t want to limit ourselves to singles only. So our weekly list will be a mix of new hits, album tracks, rarities, remixes, and the occasional old song we’ve just (re)discovered. Just like the album chart this isn’t strictly about which song is ‘the best’, it’s just the selection of songs we’re playing and enjoying the most at the moment!

Just like with the album chart this week sees only new entries, which is kinda obvious since this is the first ever chart we do. In the future we’ll do little write-ups on new songs that enter the chart, but with 40 songs that seems a bit much, so we’ll just run through the entire thing quickly:
- Not entirely unexpected there’s plenty of songs from albums that are in our album chart, with The Saturdays and Little Mix pretty much ruling both lists this week.
- Glad You Came and Get Back (ASAP) are very much the odd ones out, having been released months ago already, but both songs just clicked with us recently. And they clicked big time!
- Alexandria Everett and Allison Harvard are two contestants from America’s Next Top Model who ended up recording their own singles. Those were more publicity stunts than anything else, but nevertheless both ended up being quite amazing.
- And then there’s one other X Factor recording we fell in love with, a very decent boyband song, something that’s an early draft of Madonna’s new single, Sophie Ellis-Bextor acting raunchy, and plenty of other very enjoyable songs..

We plan on making a Spotify playlist or something like that of our weekly Song Chart, although obviously some songs would be missing.. Do you know a good alternative, or do you think Spotify is definitely the way to go?

Popsessed Album Chart: 01-01-2011

As from this week on, one of our New Year’s resolutions is to start keeping up a weekly chart of our favourite and most played albums and songs. This won’t be a straight copy of our Last.fm stats, cause we have our weeks of ignoring an album while still remaining quite fond of it, and neither is it all about quality, because otherwise it would end up being an ‘alltime favourites’ list. It’s just a list of what we like to listen to most at the moment.

This week (obviously) sees 15 ‘all new’ entries, topped by a large portion of 2011’s winter releases, followed by some older ones like Cinderella’s Eyes and From Here To Anywhere that are still absolutely brilliant, but just not quite as exciting and fresh anymore. Little Jackie’s August released Made4TV however did jump back up a few spots after we became obsessed with it again during our 2011 Top 100 preparations. And though it was hard to choose between the top 3, our currently biggest Popsession would be the collection of Little Mix’ X Factor performances.

A fresh albums chart should be up next sunday, expect our songs chart to be ready within a day or so!

No problem, cause the next 30 minutes you can listen to a mix of 26 of the past months best singles and album tracks!

This months mix features Beyoncé, Nicola Roberts, Lady Gaga, Maroon 5 ft. Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Lopez, The Saturdays, Selena Gomez, and many many others. It takes a little time to get going, but once it does it does bigtime!

We’ll try our very best to finish every month with a mix of the past month’s big releases, our Popsessions and people who have been heavily featured on our blog that month!

Enjoy!

Oh, and if you like it, make sure to let us know! We’re hardly collecting ‘likes’, but creating a mix takes about 2 full days, so it is good to know if it’s worth the effort!

Clearly there is such a thing as too many hairextensions. Also: bad video stills.
But apart from that this actually is a very nice music video (loving the Alright, Still meets I Wish effects!). On a related note: Help! The song is growing on us!
