Popsessed Album Chart: 15-01-2011

Another week gone, time for another update of our album chart!

It’s inevitable at this time of year, but it’s once again a quiet week for our albums. Still, we got one new album which, at this time of little new releases, we’ve obviously been playing a lot. We’ll write more on Young London’s album later this week, but their selftitled debut (which is out now) is quite an enjoyable pop album that will definitely be hanging around in our chart for a while!

Meanwhile, we keep loving Kelly, The Saturdays, Cher and Little Jackie, the One Direction album keeps growing, and Fawni’s Dirty Street Glam already leaves after just one week in the chart

Our Popsessed Song Chart will be up tomorrow!

Popsessed’s 2011 Top 100: #60-51

This took a little longer than expected.. gotta love crashing browsers just when you’re done typing! Anyway, before we head on to our 2011 Top 50, here’s a little bit about the last 10 songs that just missed out on it…

60. Robyn - Call Your Girlfriend

That outfit, that hair, those dance moves… Sometimes Robyn is just a little bit tóó quirky for our liking. Musically we also prefer her melancholic songs to her more experimental ones like Fembot. Luckily for her, Call Your Girlfriend falls in the first category. For an adultery ballad, a genre that usually hardly makes us go ‘awww, poor homewrecker’, this is quite a beautiful touching song, and the production’s as good as electropop gets.

59. Lasgo - Here With Me

Our first post about the new Lasgo single was hardly a rave review. Here With Me is Lasgo by numbers (with a whistle thrown in), and might as well have been released in 2002. Despite it not exactly winning any originality awards however it’s still quite an enjoyable ‘dancing with tears in my eyes’ piece of eurodance.

58. Zoë Badwi - Accidents Happen

There’s something incredibly ’90s about Zoë’s selftitled dance debut album. And even though we just judged our number 59 for sounding like something from 2002, in this case it’s actually part of the charm. Eurodance acts like Lasgo, Milk Inc and Sylver aside, we don’t often get to hear poppy dance albums that aren’t just by a faceless DJ act. That, combined with the fact that it didn’t sound very 2011 at all, made Zoë quite a refreshing record. With so many hooks it’s almost one big chorus, Accidents Happen is our favourite song of the album by a mile. This would have fitted in quite well on The Saturdays’ last album.

57. Kat Deluna - Dancing Tonight

Forget about Gaga, Kat Deluna is one of RedOne’s first and biggest muses. Though his, slightly samey, trademark sound isn’t hard to recognize, a little latin flavor makes sure Kat’s music still very much has it’s clear own sound. Her two albums are both great and we’re a bit puzzled why she hasn’t become a bigger popstar yet, but what we really don’t get is how she doesn’t have at least one worldwide summer hit a year?

56. Ke$ha - Blow

For the biggest part of 2011 this was the mostplayed song on our iTunes. We assume some other better songs were duped by us having multiple versions, uncounted YouTube plays, or some other unfortunate circumstances like that, because Blow is not thát special. That being said, we dó love it, and it’s probably our favourite Ke$ha single. But number 56 feels about right.

55. Alexis Jordan - Hush Hush

Another big case of ‘how isn’t she a huge popstar yet?’. Alexis got a great voice, great tunes, and definitely looks the part of a proper star in her videos as well. Hush Hush is the closest she’s come thusfar to sounding like America’s Agnes. It may be no Release Me, but it would have been a very decent follow-up.

54. Aqua - Like A Robot

It seems like Aqua has grown up quite a bit since their Barbie Girl days. Suddenly hearing them sing about getting fucked could have easily ended up ruining our childhood, but the fact they came back with a full new album, sounding exactly like how you’d expect Aqua to sound in 2011, kept that from happening. We’re still a bit sad this remained just a promo single, and only two proper singles got released from their new record, but that aside it was one of greatest band comebacks we’ve ever witnessed.

53. Rihanna - S&M

This is by far our favourite song on Loud, which seems to be quite an unpopular opinion. We’ve always preferred fun Rihanna, who we’ve seen way too little since her Good Girl Gone Bad Days, and this song and video were the most fun we’ve had with Rihanna since… well, actually only since Who’s That Chick. Either way, we like it like it.

52. Dionne Bromfield - Foolin’

Even though we tend to love anything with even a hint of Motown to it, back in 2009 an album full of a 13 year old singing covers of soul classics wasn’t quite our cup of tea. So when it’s follow-up Good For The Soul got released, we weren’t exactly the first ones in line to get ourselves a copy. Then we heard the singles. And fuck us, they were good! As was the album. All original songs, sounding both fresh and authentic and all having great tunes and vocals. Like a poppier version of her late aunt Amy. Can you believe this girl’s still only 15?

51. Jessica Sutta - Show Me

Oh, right.. the girl who had to dye her hair red so people wouldn’t notice Carmit left the Pussycat Dolls? Yeah, she released her first proper solo single this year. And what do you know? It was actually great, beating all of Nicole’s singles on this list hands down! Like many dance songs Show Me isn’t particularly clever or original, but it’s definitely one hell of a tune!

Popsessed’s 2011 Top 100: #60-51

On to our next 10 2011 favourites, with this video once again containing quite a lot of uptempo/dance pop songs. Seems we liked those a lot last year, although not the most, because almost all of them did miss out on our top 50.

A write-up of #60-51 will be up later today.

Popsessed Song Chart 8-1-2012
There’s quite a lot of movement in our second weekly song chart!Alesha Dixon gets the year’s first proper 2012 number 1, obviously in a period with few releases, but nontheless it’s a great and deserved victory. Then there’s a quite awesome mash-up, Cher and Little Jackie benefit a lot from their video releases this week, and From Above makes us wish we hadn’t finished our 2011 Top 100 yet. Why do we álways end up discovering great past year singles one or two weeks into the next year?

Meanwhile, Alexandra Burke didn’t quite trample the competition with her Elephant yet, but we have a feeling that might happen soon enough when the radio edit surfaces!
New entries:1. Alesha Dixon - Do It Our Way (Play)2. Rihanna vs. Katy Perry - You Da One That Got Away12. Little Jackie - 31 Flavors24. Kelly Clarkson - Alone26. From Above - Not The Same Girl28. Alexandra Burke - Elephant (Sympho Nympho Remix)33. Aqua - Kill Myself39. One Direction - Stole My Heart40. Fawni - EchoOf course new entries also mean that some songs had to leave..

All perfectly decent songs, that would probably have been around a bit longer than 1 week if our charts had been around last year, but by now there’s unfortunately 40 songs we’re more excited about!

Popsessed Album Chart: 08-01-2011

Time for our second ever album chart, which means our first proper chart update!

No major changes this week.. We hardly listened to Little Mix, which allowed other acts to move up a few spots, we realized we still enjoy the Aqua album quite a lot, and Parade’s debut kept growing on us. There’s two modest new entries at the bottom of our list, being two dance pop albums by the Austrian Fawni and the Swedish Eric Saade. Their entries meant the end for the chart runs of David Guetta’s Nothing But The Beat and Zoë Badwi’s Zoë.

The Popsessed Album Chart is based on a combination on which albums we play and enjoy most. A fresh Popsessed Song Chart should be up soon as well.

Popsessed Album Chart: 01-01-2011

As from this week on, one of our New Year’s resolutions is to start keeping up a weekly chart of our favourite and most played albums and songs. This won’t be a straight copy of our Last.fm stats, cause we have our weeks of ignoring an album while still remaining quite fond of it, and neither is it all about quality, because otherwise it would end up being an ‘alltime favourites’ list. It’s just a list of what we like to listen to most at the moment.

This week (obviously) sees 15 ‘all new’ entries, topped by a large portion of 2011’s winter releases, followed by some older ones like Cinderella’s Eyes and From Here To Anywhere that are still absolutely brilliant, but just not quite as exciting and fresh anymore. Little Jackie’s August released Made4TV however did jump back up a few spots after we became obsessed with it again during our 2011 Top 100 preparations. And though it was hard to choose between the top 3, our currently biggest Popsession would be the collection of Little Mix’ X Factor performances.

A fresh albums chart should be up next sunday, expect our songs chart to be ready within a day or so!

New Popsession: Aqua - Megalomania
We’ve always loved Aqua. Don’t judge us, just like Steps weren’t all about 5,6,7,8, Aqua are far more than just ‘that gimmicky Barbie Girl band’. Behind all the cheese there’s actually a bunch of really strong wellwritten pop songs.. oh yes, and some pure filth..
‘DJ DJ on the floor, who’s your slutty little whore?’Just two tracks in on the album Lene sings this piece of pure poetry on Aqua’s newest album Megalomania. Coming from the Cartoon Heroes we grew up listening to, it’s a bit like meeting a friend from elementary school for the first time since you both were kids, and her immediately starting to brag about how many orgasms she had the night before. (Or innocently reading your favourite pop blog only to stumble upon this wonderful analogy) Yes, awkward.
To be fair, they have always been a little cheeky (Aqua that is), but up till now it used to be in such a way that children could still sing along to all of their songs without getting expelled. This time around.. well even as an adult you wouldn’t want a colleague walking in on you having a little sing-a-long to (Fuck Me) Like A Robot.
While their raunchy lyrics on a few songs here are pretty hard to ignore, they’re luckily not all the album has to offer, and they’re definitely not here to cover up the fact the material isn’t all that great. Because it is. Megalomania is everything you’d expect Aqua to sound like in 2011. That does not involve anysongs about Lollipops or Bumble Bees this time around, but in a slightly more mature way it’s still most definitely a fun album. Where 2000’s Aquarius experimented a little bit more with different sounds (not equally succesful on each song), Megalomania pretty much is the 2011 version of Aqua’s debut album Aquarium, where dance pop is the dominant sound.Though we wouldn’t have minded a new Turn Back Time, the slowest we get here are the midtempos If The World Wouldn’t Suck (We’d All Fall Of) and single Playmate To Jesus, which makes the album as a whole a proper upbeat listen. Excellent Saturday night ‘getting ready for a night out’ material, this album can’t nót cheer you up. Our favourite bits are however the more emotional/dramatical uptempos Kill Myself and especially Be My Saviour Tonight. The latter easily could have made an excellent ballad, but it works incredibly well as the ‘heartache on the dancefloor’ tune it’s become instead.

If we had to pick one weakest link here it would probably be first single How R U Doin’. It suffers slightly from the ‘old song on new album’ syndrom, but it’s also the most generic throwaway dance tune on the album. Still, after being warmed up by the previous 8 uptempos, we can easily resist the desire to skip it. From start to end Megalomania is a 40 minute treat of original lyrics, catchy beats, and especially undeniably great melodies.

Popsessed Top 5: 25-9-2011

Britney completed her full two weeks in the Top 5, and Beyoncé, surprisingly, got the least votes. So two new songs have been added in their place, being the new Aqua and September singles, thus making the list very Scandipop heavy.

Let’s see how long it will stay that way!
